part-timer...

I know, its been too long. Sorry. My only excuse is a lack of post-fodder, due to having finished a very interesting year at university. I also moved house and have a crap internet connection here (but I'm not complaining, as its an open and free wireless signal coming from my blissfully unaware neighbours!).

So a bit of an update is in order, and probably a more personal post, for a change.

Thanks to Andrew for reminding me about the new Douglas Coupland novel, JPod.I got my copy in the post the other day and am enjoying it very much so far. Found this review of it.

I also bought the new Grandaddy album, Just like the Fambly Cat.I have to say this is another great Grandaddy album. It has wonderful pop tunes such as Jeez Louise, Elevate Myself, and plenty of spacious, synthy melancholy numbers such as 'Summer, Its gone', 'Guide down tonight' and 'Thats how it always starts'. It is a sad album, apparently written in the knowldge of the bands imminent breakup (without a tour). Lines like "I'd rather make an honest sound, and watch it fly around and then be on my way", make that clear enough. It is also incredibly honest and human. At one point in 'Elevate myself', Jason Lyttle sings that he's like to get to a place where he'd find it hard to hate himself. I love it, I recommend it. lets hope they get back together and start making some money.
Finally, and on a less currentnote, I last night watched 'Natural Born Killers', by Oliver Stone.I enjoyed it immensely. It really really messes with the traditional movie making rules, and subversively undermines TV, and corporate type media in general. While it is a violent and gory movie, it is so much more than a simple gore-fest. It doesn't glorify violence, infact, it does the opposite in a roundabout kind of way. There is so much to think about in this movie. If you haven't seen it - do. Thats all I'll say.

Yeah man, JPod looks class - I'll be getting a copy soon no doubt. The demise of Grandaddy will be mourned for many years to come. Haven't seen 'natural born killers' will have to check it out.

yeah dave. they will be mourned. i can only say thankyou to the likes of matt and andy for exposing me to them initially. i am grateful. and do check nbk's out, its very reminiscent of fight club (right on steve). it has those instantaneous flashes of images that fc used to such intrigue. it has some crazy cartoon images too, which give communicate the emotional tone of the scene to great effect - big, muscular crazy f***ers running madly down narrow corridors. very emotive. there are also crazy crazy perverse scenes where real aspects of the protagonists lives are portrayed as mock tv soap-opera's, supposedly communicating the extent to which tv/media informs/distorts the images we have of ourselves. its so powerful. definitely one of the best movies i've seen. about time too. thanks for posting guys.x
